In Cuenca Ecuador you can’t wear shorts…
…into a bank or any other
government office. Now this rule may have changed since we first heard about it
two years ago, but even so, it is highly frowned upon. To the Ecuadorian
authorities wearing shorts in their business shows a sign of disrespect. We have
heard that if you dress in slacks and blouse or collar shirt you are more apt to
get better treatment. We do not know if this is true or not but it makes sense
from what we have seen so far in Cuencano
society. Ecuador is one of those cultures where it is usually best to be
over-dressed than under-dressed.

On another note: Here
are some photos we took of the downtown area recently. we believe they
are updating the underground plumbing.
What I love about your blog: It is refreshingly real. Along with beautiful images of scenery you show (and speak to) daily living in Cuenca.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Jani
Thank you for your kind words.
ReplyDeleteIt's frowned upon anywhere in Ecuador to wear shorts....in Guayaquil I go out with capris on...it's the only way I can cope with the heat.
ReplyDeletePlanning a trip to Cuenca on the 11th of this month, Sept. Have been doing a lot of surfing for articles on Cuenca and came across your blog. Great job, straight forward and very informative.
ReplyDeleteOur visit is sort of a vacation/recon run. We have talked about possibly moving there. Much to decide on first.
We lived in the Marianas Islands for about four and a half years and loved it until the government started to change. Thanks again,
