Taking a taxi in Quito, Guayaquil and Manta can be dangerous, and it is for this reason I am re-posting this news article to remind folks to take great caution when taking taxis in these bigger cities of Ecuador!
Quito is a beautiful city with great people but there are a few bad apples. We're glad the authorities have apprehended some of these bad apples and taken them off the streets but it is an on-going problem in Ecuador. It is BEST to always use a taxi you already know and trust.

Quito Ecuador: Eight People Detained in Kidnap Express Ring

Police detained 8 people dedicated to express kidnapping in Quito
eluniverso.com reported that criminals used a unique communication system that was used by alleged members of a gang of express kidnapping operating in Quito was discovered by the Judicial Police (PJ) of Pichincha who followed their trail about four months ago. The early Thursday were arrested eight Ecuadorians who were holding six painted yellow with fake logos legal taxi cooperatives, even with the identification of Transportation auto insurance system.
Ramiro Ortega, head of the PJ said that criminals were located on the outside of malls, upscale restaurants and entertainment areas for potential victims choose to offering taxi service.
Once boarded the vehicle were analyzed by fake taxi drivers that determined whether people wore technological objects and their economic capacity. Behind were always one or two more vehicles with criminals who carried out the robbery. According to the police investigation, if the false cab activated parking lights meant that passengers had nothing valuable and that the race should continue. But if the left turn signal was lit was alert to indicate that the person had valuables. The next signal was right directional light indicating it was time to attack. Between September 2014 and February this year, authorities received 171 reports of crimes under this modality.
The express kidnapping is especially committed between 22:00 and 02:00 the next day to take advantage of this change of day and make the most money from ATMs. Injured recognized some of those arrested this morning.
Victims told that they were physically and psychologically abused by criminals in the span of four hours they were touring the city, before abandoning in unpopulated areas. Even the police are investigating whether these suspects are related to the rape of a woman who fell victim to express kidnapping.
