Remembering the Humble Village of Pedernales Ecuador Before & After the 2016 Earthquake

The 7.8 earthquake of April 16, 2016 has left thousands of people homeless along the Ecuador coast. Many of the smaller fishing villages and towns along the northern part of the coastline were rocked hard and the country is in a state of emergency.

We know the North beaches from Manta to Atacames intimately and we feel blessed to have gotten to know some of the townsfolk on a more personal basis while we researched and wrote the DIY Ecuador Coast Guide Book.  (Take note, clicking on the photos will enlarge them for a better view.)

Living in Ecuador for 5 years has given us the great opportunity to observe the unparalleled resourcefulness of Ecuadorians and the strong family bonds that make the country of Ecuador what it is today. And we have learned through the years how Ecuadorians manage hardships and loss. Ecuadorians are truly compassionate and caring people and they will remain strong and bonded even during these trying times.

However that doesn't mean they couldn't use more helping hands. Ecuador is going through a devastating time, especially the coastal people and they will need all the help they can get from those who are generous to volunteer their time and or money.

Pedernales Ecuador is one of several fishing towns that was decimated during the earthquake, leaving thousands of people homeless and to deal with the aftermath of earthquake destruction. And that's why we want to share a little bit about the village of Pedernales with you so you can get an idea of what this village once was and will be again in the future.

The beaches of Pedernalas are one of the prettiest, longest, and widest beaches we experienced all along the Ecuador coastline. The wide sandy beaches run in a straight line north to south for several miles. The beaches of Pedernales is one of our favorites along the entire coast of Ecuador.

In fact for those who bought the DIY Coastal Guide Book they will notice, we call the town of Pedernales "The Diamond in the Rough" and for good reason. It's a gem and still is a gem.

Nothing can destroy or take away the beaches (not even an earthquake) because they are a part of Nature's story; and the extraordinary big and wide beaches are what makes Pedernales' coastline one of the best and beautiful beaches along the Ecuador coast.

The people of Pedernales Ecuador are curious, friendly and above all, humble. this is not something we are saying now because the buildings have been flattened; we wrote about the wonderful people of this coastal town in 2013, way before this earthquake came roaring into town.  Click screenshot below and take a closer look.

We observed the people of Pedernales as being humble and peaceful people. In fact, we noticed right away there were no pushy salesmen trying to get us to buy something like the other beach towns, which can get annoying after awhile. We literally had to run from pushy sales people in Puerto Lopez and Salinas during tourist season.

Let us tell you a little secret, if you think Cuencanos are laid back and family oriented folks, well then you haven't met coastal folks yet...they too love spending time with their families and are even more laid back, easy going and more sociable than Andean folks.

Our prayers go out to everyone during these difficult times. It's not time to lose spirit; it's time to ban together in Spirit and pray for the families of Ecuador.

An earthquake cannot destroy or take away the Spirits of the Ecuadorian people because that is something special and unique that belongs to each individual. As we are viewing in many of the videos online about the earthquake aftermath, Ecuadorians will remain strong in Spirit, banning together and rebuilding their towns and villages to what they once were.

As a final remembrance we leave you with a video of the bustling town of Pedernales and what it looked like before the earthquake, and what this town will be again in the future to come.
