Message to our Readers

Message to our Readers:

We spend a few hours every day to answer several hundred emails every single month.  If you didn’t get an answer to your email, be sure to check your SPAM folder.  Remember, when you purchase the DIY CUENCA LANDING GUIDE,  you get free email support.

Again: we can't always answer every single email that comes in. Please understand, the internet and email in particular being what it is, that it is not infallible, you should also take the responsibility of checking your SPAM folder right away and making an extra effort to communicate with us.   If you have a real life pressing need there is always the 'consulting button'.  This is for a skype consulting session directly with Frank and Angie.

Remember, before contacting us with your questions, there are several hundred articles on the website.  Just use the ‘search’ bar at the left side, and use different keywords for each subject you’re interested in so that you can pull up all the articles.

In addition, there are also several hundred videos for your viewing pleasure, and THEY’RE ALL FREE.  We welcome your questions, but please remember, when you click on the ‘contact us’ button and read, you will see our policy is that we DON’T ANSWER PERSONAL QUESTIONS.  Please save our time and yours by rephrasing your question.

It takes a lot of time and effort to put out all that information for free, it's a full time job.

As you may already know from following our writings, we share our experiences, instead of our opinions, as much as possible, so that people can make a more informed decision.

Again, we thank you for your patronage, and if you have any other questions, feel free to let us know.

  1. hi everybody
is any of you now how i can have INFO abut RESIDENCY visa for IRANIAN.. i mien the document i need to apply..i am planing to move CUENCA ECUADOR
    on DEC 20 2013
    thank you all

  2. The HUGE Negatives for foreign residents retiring in Ecuador are :
    1) The English speaking lawyers charge every foreign person applying for
residency in Ecuador about 90% more than if the senile person completed the
residency requirements on their own or in their own country or in Ecuador.
    2) There are NO effective common sense Public Safety laws in Ecuador,
NO pedestrian laws, NO Health laws, NO Ecology laws!
    3) Public utilities are NOT reliable
    4) If you step off a sidewalk into the street and fall into a 7 ft. hole in the gutter,
the city is not responsible for the maintenance or safety of any streets or
    sidewalks in Ecuador.
    5) If your car, motor cycle or bicycle drives into an open sewer man hole or storm
drain manhole because the man hole cover has been missing for the last 3
months, the city is not responsible or liable for any lack of public safety or
    public maintenance!
    6) If your in a cross walk and the city bus runs you over and kills you or one of
your children, the city is not liable.
    7) If you get sick from drinking contaminated water from your home water faucet,
the city is not responsible or liable.
    8) There are NO emission or pollution laws in Ecuador
    9) The police & the sewer Rat politicians are incompetent & basically worthless
    10) The internet service is grossly incompetent & operates for ten minutes & then
stops for ten minutes throughout each day! This makes it impossible to use
Vonage or Magic Jack Internet phone service or any internet phone service.
    11) The mail takes a month to deliver or to receive.
    12) 98% of the typical ordinary people do not speak or understand the English
    13) It’s 100% impossible to socialize with typical ordinary latin people because
they don’t understand anyone who is not 100% fluent with the spanish
    14) Excellent Tourist spanish is 100% useless to socialize with!
    15) All public utilities must be paid in person while waiting in a long line.
    16) The typical ordinary spanish speaking people will not be friendly or
sociable because they don’t understand English & most foreign residents
do not speak spanish fluently to converse socially!
    17) 98% of all English speaking foreign residents will be 500% or more isolated
& alone, living in Ecuador than in America, Canada or western Europe.

    18) Evil Catholic super over population & poverty are a very BIG & serious problem.
    19) Incompetent banking laws in Ecuador are a very big & serious problem.

    1. Wow.
You sound like a very unhappy person. I'm willing to bet you had lots of the same problems where you came from.
So it's always someone else's responsibility to watch out for your welfare, is that it? Gee, it's such a bummer that you can't sue the city when you ride your bicycle into a manhole cover.
Try practicing a little personal responsibility.

  3. I wonder why a person like this, doesn't pick up his bags and go back home. have lived and worked in 5 countries during my working years and enjoyed every one of those countries.

  4. Stop attacking the person who is pointing out how things work in Ecuador and most other 3rd world countries. I think it is great for people to share their thoughts good or bad. The constant knee jerk reaction of expats to attack the messenger if they say something negative about their newly adopted home is the worst part of expat living.

Living in the 3rd world is a huge risk. You have no legal standing and are nothing but a foreigner in the eyes of locals. Even if you have permanent residency you are still considered an outsider. Crime wise you are a target and must always be vigilant. Trust no one, live behind bars, own mean dogs to feel safe. You call this paradise? It is much safer in North America, period. Expats are getting robbed left and right. Just ask around and they will tell you.

Having lived in Latin 3rd world for almost a decade it is a harrowing experience. The only perk is lower cost of living and better climate. But the negatives add up. It's important to be aware of the negatives in order to fully assess the situation. If you lower your standards and expectations too much then you are essentially selling your soul.

There are certain behaviors you should never accept if they go against your principal such as lying, cheating or stealing. You will be tested often in Latin America. Tolerate it, but don't accept it. And if you decide to no longer tolerate it then good for you. Time to move back to first world and enjoy what you mistakenly left behind.

  5. Frank, Angie and family,

First of all, let me congratulate you on an incredible job with your blog and videos, well done! Thousands of hours have gone into all you have built over the past 4 years or so.

I know first hand how challenging and rewarding it is to publicly put yourself out there with a desire to share information about Ecuador and all that living and working here entails.

Our family has been living in Cuenca since October 2010 and I relate to many of your thoughts and opinions. I tried to contact you through your Contact Us page but the link seems to be broken. I would like to take a few moments of your time, if you might be interested in speaking directly regarding your blog and all your great work. Please respond either via email (hopefully you have it from my registration) and we can connect.

Keep up the great work and I look forward to speaking with you!

    1. Hello Sheryle, we appreciate your kind words. Thank you!
Regarding the email: I just emailed myself a test email and it is working fine? We're getting emails from other folks as well. Just curious, what computer type are you on? Windows or Mac? Please keep trying to email us as it is working. When you click on the link to email Frank and Angie it will take you to a page where you click on a link to email us and then it opens up your email program. Try it again. Thanks!

    2. Thanks for your reply. I use a PC, not a Mac and I'm using Chrome as my browser. I'm currently in Spain at the moment, maybe that has something to do with it, though I can't imagine what (it's more likely my technical ineptitude! lol)

Okay, back to my original point which was that I would like to speak with you or at least get your thoughts via email regarding working with GringoTree. You may or may not know about GTree, we have been operating since 2007 but my husband and I took over ownership in 2012. We're looking to create win-win opportunities with other successful bloggers/videographers in order to expand our reach outside of Cuenca and to offer better quality information for new expats and travelers to Ecuador. I know you have a ton of content and I see you're even selling products like your ebook so was interested in seeing if you're open to a discussion. If you are, please suggest a few times where either myself or our Chief Editor Joanna Bender can contact you for a chat.

Thanks for your response and I look forward to hearing from you!

  6. Hi again. Perhaps you could have Joanna try to email us since she may not be in Spain? Or if you're comfortable you can leave your email here, and we'll email you?
